Other Important Characteristics of tungsten carbide
* Specific weight
* Co-efficient of Thermal Expansion
* Porosity
Specific weight:
It is expressed in terms of gm/cm3. The specific weight decreases with increase in binder percentage.
Co-efficient of Thermal Expansion:
This indicates the amount of change in size due to change in temperature. It is necessary to consider when the Tungsten Carbide is used at varying temperatures. The co-efficient of thermal expansion is 1/2~1/3 as that of steel. This means that amount and speed of change of shape and size of Tungsten carbide is half or lower than that of steel. Due to this difference, crack may occur on carbide when brazed with steel. Hence, necessary care like; slow cooling, proper selection of brazed alloy & surface preparation of joining faces are crucial to avoid cracks.
Porosity:
The degree of porosity indicates the state of minute holes which appear in the micro-structure of cemented carbide. This porosity causes surface defects & deteriorates strength of sintered carbide.
