Important Characteristics of tungsten carbide

The Tungsten Carbide properties in the given specification chart shows basic data of each grade manufactured.

When evaluating or finding equivalents of carbide grade the important criteria is to specify two factors: 1. Hardness; 2. Transverse Rupture Strength.

1. Hardness: The hardness is defined as a resistance to penetration. More the hardness more is the resistance to abrasion.This property makes tungsten carbide most suitable material for wear resistant applications. The hardness is commonly checked in Vickers hardness scale.

2. Transverse Ruptures Strength (TRS): The cemented carbide is hard and brittle. Therefore neither a general tensile strength test nor the impact strength test is useful. Hence the Transverse Ruptures Strength test is most commonly used to determine the strength of cemented carbide.

This method is a three point bending test. Transverse Rupture Strength values are determined by the amount of force needed to break a standard test piece under controlled test conditions.
